Automotive Career Week is Here

by Lance Winslow

Looking for career in the automotive sector? You are not alone. This week over 600 car dealerships, 5 major automakers and many OEM suppliers are participating in ACW Automotive Career Week, its here. Eleven State Governors have issued important proclamations. Automotive Career Week is partly sponsored by NADA North American Dealer Association of auto dealerships and it starts on Monday, October 24 and runs through the entire Business Week.

There are participating dealers involved in forty-nine states and Washington D.C., right now Puerto Rico is too flooded. The eleven main states where the State Governments have a made decrees are in California, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont and West Virginia. Students are invited to learn first hand how auto dealerships work and how the auto retailing businesses operate.

Some dealers are hosting career days in conjunction with the event and handing out a career kit year-round. This only a few days after the Ford Motor Company has announced "significant" U.S. auto manufacturing plant closings and layoffs in January of 2007, which another hit to nation's autoworkers, as Delphi announced a bankruptcy filing and GM negotiated down healthcare costs and benefits as well as made under funded pension adjustments with UAW. Ford Motor Co just reported a third-quarter loss in the neighborhood of around $280 million citing poor sales of gas-guzzling SUV and a three percent encroachment of market share by the leading Japanese Automakers.

Meanwhile Japanese Automakers are quite pleased and view all these recent changes in the Auto Industry as a big bonus to their future market exploits with Hybrids and fuel-efficient cars.

What seems to be happening is a paradigm shift in consumer buying behavior due to higher gas prices at the pump, as well as a return of the Deming Years strategy for the Japanese Automakers, perhaps the Automotive Career Week may re-ignite some sales in the sluggish sector to stave off the massive lay-offs already announced or soak up some of those Auto Worker jobs on the dealer side of the business, because the American Automakers are moving towards robotics and will have to stay their to compete in the future. Think on all this and check out the Automotive Career Week festivities and some free food at your local participating dealership.
